Leading a weekly content meeting with staff writers

When I became managing editor of my college newspaper, I had noticed that we weren't publishing to our website, and thus we were missing out on a lot of potential engagement for readers and our content. I took it upon myself to direct the other staff members to post all of our weekly articles to our website. Within the first month of this change, views on our website increased 300%.

The fall of 2022 saw a dramatic increase in membership to my college newspaper. We had effectively doubled the number of current staff members from 6 to 12 weekly writers. Many of these new participants did not have experience with the programs that we used. I made it my responsibility to train them in laying out pages, publishing to the website, and correcting any AP style or other grammar mistakes in their stories. By the end of the semester, the new editors were experts in their roles.

During my time as managing editor, the student newspaper published what we thought was a standard restaurant review for a local restaurant. However, we then received an email from a representative of the establishment that contradicted information in the article. As managing editor, I took it upon myself to review the article, and ordered it to be taken down immediately due to the piece lacking journalistic integrity. I took full responsibility and apologized to the establishment, and reassured them that the writer would no longer be published by our paper. Although a mistake had been made, I was able to handle the situation and rectify any wrongdoings done on the part of my organization.
